The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 seasons of the Swingin’ with the CJO and Inside Track series. Under the direction of world-renowned band leader and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, continues to break new ground while honoring the rich heritage of America’s classical music – jazz. With season after season of inspiring, uplifting performances, the CJO is making audiences stand up and shout for more!
The Swingin’ with the CJO season promises to be one of our best ever
including unforgettable performances from accomplished jazz guitarist and
former Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks (October 26-30, 2011); UK vocal
sensation Helen Welch in our annual holiday spectacular (November
30-December 4, 2011); BalletMet and WOSU Public Media in a brand new
bicentennial collaboration, “Jazz Moves ColumbUS,” celebrating life in
Columbus through a synthesis of music, movement and imagery (February 2-12,
2012); Emmy Award-winning choreographer, tap dancer and Tony nominee Ted
Louis Levy in “A Night at the Cotton Club” (March 14-18, 2012); and the
soulful vocals of emerging artist Ty Taylor in “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: The Legends
of Soul” (April 11-15, 2012).
The Inside Track series gives music lovers from all walks of life the chance
to stretch their ears and stretch themselves. Our small-ensemble concert
“Don’t Listen To This!” (September 23-24, 2011), will showcase some of the
finest music ever written…that you weren’t supposed to hear! You’ll be
amazed by the stories behind these “banned” songs and learn of their rise
into mainstream American culture. In January, the CJO salutes the genius of
Ray Charles with “Hit the Road, Jack” (January 27-28, 2012) featuring a
group of his alumni including Columbus’ own Roger Hines and Sarah Morrow.
The Jazz Arts Group will also unveil the WORLD PREMIERE of the commission
“Beyond the Blackberry Patch” (March 2-3, 2012) by acclaimed trombonist and
composer Wycliffe Gordon written for ten musicians to tell the story of the
historic King-Lincoln District. Finally, the CJO will join with the most
inspiring choir in Columbus, The Harmony Project, to bring you an evening of
uplifting, joyous, highly engaging music (May 18-19, 2012). NEA Jazz Master
David Liebman and his quartet will also perform at Vonn’s Jazz Lounge on
Wednesday, November 2, 2011 as a special non-subscription addition to the
Inside Track season.
“There’s something inside me that knows this will be our best season ever,”
shares Stripling. “You won’t find this kind of fun on a YouTube video or
buried in your CD collection. Nothing can replace the fresh, living,
spontaneity of one of our live concerts at the Southern or Lincoln
Theatres!”
