“Blossom’s Garden: A Tribute to Blossom Dearie” on February 13 is the latest offering in the Chamber Jazz Series at the Columbus Museum of Art (Producer and Artistic Director: Mark Flugge). In two sets, the career of pianist, singer and songwriter Dearie (1924-2009) will be explored and highlighted. At the grand piano: Mark Flugge; Bass: Dave DeWitt; Drums: Jim Rupp; Vocalist: Jody Mancini. The group will swing, samba, waltz and stomp through a variety of numbers.
Some would say that Blossom Dearie’s girlish voice was a limitation to her, but no: her wit and wry humor always came through, and this petite, elegant woman was never afraid to speak out for what she needed, wanted, or even expected from musicians, venue operators, and audiences alike. Critics have praised Dearie for her impeccable delivery, playful sense of swing, and her exquisite taste in tunes to perform. Fresh arrangements are being created by Flugge for this special afternoon. Come early for your ticket (adults $20, seniors $15, students $7), which includes admission to the museum as well as the 3 o’clock show.
