Celebrate 100 Years of Sinatra at Swingin With The CJO

The next installment of the Swingin’ with the CJO 2014-15 series will be “100 Years of Sinatra” held February 5-8th at the Southern Theatre. The tribute will feature international jazz singer Dee Daniels and local vocalists Phil Clark and Dwight Lenox. Daniels is perhaps best known for her four-octave range and her ability to lend her own unique expression of sound when covering the work of jazz legends. She will be accompanied by Phil Clark, saxophonist and vocalist for Columbus’ own Hoodoo Soul Band and bandleader of his own Phil Clark and The SOUL; and by Dwight Lenox, a featured vocalist with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and leader of The Lenox Avenue Express. Read on for more information on the upcoming show and the Dee Daniels workshop that will be held on February 7th.

COME FLY AWAY WITH THE COLUMBUS JAZZ ORCHESTRA

IN “100 YEARS OF FRANK SINATRA,” FEBRUARY 5-8

Columbus, OH – The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) continues its 2014-15 Swingin’ with the CJO season with “100 Years of Frank Sinatra” (February 5-8 at the Southern Theatre) to honor the music and legacy of “The Chairman of the Board” on the centennial of his birth.

Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, defined the classic American Songbook for decades with verve and panache. Long acclaimed as the world’s greatest performer of popular music, Sinatra is the artist who set the standard for all others to follow. Sinatra was, of course, more than a singer — he was an actor, recording artist, cabaret and concert star, radio and television personality, and, on occasion, producer, director, and conductor. Lending their incredible vocal talents to the stage are Dee Daniels, Dwight Lenox, and Phil Clark to honor the music and legacy of “The Voice.”

Dee Daniels has cultivated a diverse career that has also seen her on theatre stages including the 2009 premiere of New York choreographer Twyla Tharp’s musical tribute to Frank Sinatra, Come Fly With Me. With the creation of her Symphony Pops programs, Great Ladies of Swing, The Soul of Ray: The Music of Ray Charles, and A Night Out With the Boys, Dee has enjoyed sharing stages with symphony orchestras across the USA and Canada.

Audience members can join Byron Stripling for a casual and engaging conversation with Dee Daniels and the wonderful guest artists of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in a new workshop series at the Jazz Academy. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” provides participants a behind-the-scenes glimpse from the artist perspective on performing with the CJO – adding new perspective to being an audience member. In addition to the opportunity to learn something new, each guest artist will be asked to share what they are currently listening to on their iPods or CD players, introducing audiences to new and exciting music and artists. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” is free to CJO subscribers and $10 for general registrants. Pre-registration is requested and available online at www.jazzartsgroup.org.
