The Jazz Arts Group and the Columbus Jazz Orchestra open their 2014-2015 season on Friday, September 19th featuring special guest Mary Wilson of the famous Motown group, the Supremes. Wilson along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard topped the charts with a plethora of Motown hits and were one of the most popular Motown groups of all time. This performance will most certainly feature some of their top hits alongside the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. From JAG:
The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) is pleased to open its 2014-15 Columbus Jazz Orchestra (CJO) season at the historic Lincoln Theatre with a Motor City celebration featuring the legendary Mary Wilson of The Supremes in “Motown Medley” (September 19-20, 2014).
Filling the charts with thirty-three Top 40 hits, Mary Wilson lived the life of a star as she, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard became the premier act of Motown and the most successful “girl group” in history. Joined by Byron Stripling & the CJO, this iconic dreamgirl will take center stage to present an evening of classic hits from Motown’s golden era that will have you swinging, swaying, and “dancing in the street!”
While Ms. Wilson is best known as a founding member of the world’s most famous female trio – they recorded twelve No. 1 hits from 1964 to 1969 – the legendary singer’s career did not stop there, and she continues to soar to untold heights. Ms. Wilson is a best-selling author, motivational speaker, businesswoman, former U.S. Cultural Ambassador, and dedicated humanitarian working to promote women’s health and end landmine proliferation.
In 1988, Mary Wilson accepted the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the Supremes when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1994, the Supremes received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 1998, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. This past summer marked the 50th anniversary of their first number-one hit single, “Where Did Our Love Go.”
“Her mere presence makes our celebration totally authentic, with songs we’ve all come to know and love,” shares Stripling.
