The Columbus Jazz Orchestra‘s 2015-16 “Swingin’ With the CJO” series continues next week with a deluxe presentation of selections from the American Songbook. “Standards and Strings” features former Count Basie Orchestra vocalist Carmen Bradford, and the 16-piece CJO will be augmented by a full string section for a lush sonic backdrop. This program will run for four shows at the Southern Theatre: Thursday, March 17th, at 7:30pm; Friday, March 18th, at 8pm; Saturday, March 19th, at 8pm; and Sunday, March 20th, at 3pm. Tickets for all performances are available here. Sunday’s matinee performance includes admission to an opening set by the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra at 2pm. Ms. Bradford will also take part in a free Offstage at the Jazz Academy Workshop on Saturday at 2pm in the Jazz Arts Group offices in the Lincoln Theatre complex. Born into a musical family, Bradford was discovered by Count Basie and was the featured vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1982 to 1990. She has since performed with an impressive list of jazz greats and has recorded a handful of albums. Keep reading for videos of Bradford performances and more of her background in her own words:
