In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) returns to the historic Southern Theatre to pay “R.E.S.P.E.C.T” (April 11 – 15). Under the direction of Artistic Director Byron Stripling, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and guest vocalists Chris Pierce and Bobbi Townes salute the legendary figures of soul including “The Godfather of Soul” James Brown, Sam Cooke, “Mr. Excitement” Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, Ike & Tina, and “The Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin.
Each April, Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) shines the spotlight on the extraordinary history of jazz and its importance in American culture. Through concerts, lectures, films, and other programs, JAM encourages people of all ages to attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, study the music, and support institutional jazz programs.
Lending his extraordinary vocal talents to this show is Los Angeles soul/R&B artist Chris Pierce. He has shared the bill with artists such as B.B. King, Toots & The Maytals, SEAL, Jamie Cullum, Ben Harper, Macy Gray, Colbie Caillat, and Al Green. Pierce has recently released his fifth studio album, I Can Hear You, and has had his music featured on such television shows as Army Wives, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy and more. Also sharing the stage with Pierce is guest vocalist Bobbi Townes. Townes fronts the Columbus hard rock/funk band Fresh Wreckage and is the daughter of CJO pianist Bobby Floyd.
