Columbus Ohio Jazz group, The Dan White Sextet, is getting ready to release eight brand new tracks/arrangements via their YouTube channel in the upcoming month. The group, who recently traveled to New York, is comprised of five current/former attendees of The Ohio State University, and the another member who is currently working on his master’s degree from Julliard in New York City. Through funding provided by Ohio State, the sextet was able to travel to Supr Dupr Sound studios in Brooklyn where they recorded and performed at the Somethin Jazz Club in Manhattan.
During their two day tenure at the studio, the group recorded new tracks, all written by members of the band. The sessions were professionally filmed by NYC based Simon Yu, and appropriately named, “The Dan White Sextet: New York Sessions.” The group plans to release two videos per week, over a four week period. After the release have finished, an album on iTunes will be made available.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Jon Lampley, trumpet/sousaphone, says their music covers a broad range:
“The whole purpose of our group is to draw from each of our own unique experiences to create a unique sound….this project will include everything from the first stuff we released (Dave Matthews, Radiohead vibe) to arrangements of Disney songs, to our own original songs that have all kind of different feels,” Lampley said. “We’ve been playing the songs that we’ve recorded for a while now, but every time we play them and when different personnel come in and out of the group, the vibe of each tune is always changing. This version of the sextet really made the music our own and we are very pleased the end result.
