The Wednesday residency program returns to jazz in May with five weeks of programming by guitarist, composer and educator Alex Schrock. His month of shows will present a variety of material, both drawing from his own catalog and the compositions of a selection of legends. The Canton native will play with some local all-stars, but is also drawing from his Northeast Ohio roots for more great players to collaborate with on May 17th and 24th. Schrock was very kind to provide details on the lineups and programs for his residency – keep reading to learn more. These shows will run from about 10pm to 2am each Wednesday, and the cover is $5.
Wednesday, May 3rd, Schrock will kick off his residency with the standard lineup of the Alex Schrock Trio, with Ryan Jewell on drums and John Allen on bass [pictured, left to right]. Schrock tells me the band will be “doing a mix of my original compositions and my favorite standards.” Read the JazzColumbus review of Punk Jazz, Schrock’s 2016 album of original trio tunes, here.
May 10th sees the same trio lineup return to the stage to perform the music of Thelonious Monk. Schrock: “This will be a fun night that will mix in his more well known music with some very obscure ones.”
The May 17th performance will be a night focused on “the music of John Coltrane, which will feature both his hard swinging blues based songs and his more challenging compositions. This time I will be bringing down people from the great Northeast – Kevin Martinez on bass and Anthony Taddeo on drums.”
May 24th will be dedicated to Brazilian music, including works by masters like Jobim, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, and Sergio Mendes. The band for the evening will feature Chris Coles on saxophone, Lucas Holmes on keys and Anthony Taddeo on drums/percussion. Schrock: “This will be a nice change of pace – having a nylon string guitar and percussion in the mix.”
The lineup and program for the May 31st finale are still in the works.
