Dick’s Den Residency: Doug Neel

Dick’s Den offers another great schedule of (mostly) jazz for its Wednesday residency program in July. Guitarist, trombonist, and educator Doug Neel returns to the helm this month for his second installment of special shows shining light on some of his different interests and favorite collaborations – including a release party for his debut album (JazzColumbus review forthcoming)! Each week’s show will start around 9:30pm and the cover each week is $5. Neel was kind enough to provide details on each show, so keep reading to learn more.

Doug Neel: As part of my month-long residency at “The Carnegie Hall Of Jazz,” Dick’s Den, I will be featuring a different group every Wednesday evening in July:

Night #1 (Wednesday, July 5th):
Night #1 will feature Doug Neel (guitar) with fellow Harmony Project bandmates Chris Brown (keys), Dwight Bailey (bass), and Reggie Jackson (drums). We’ll be playing a wide cross-section of funk & fusion classics, in addition to a few “pop” tunes, and I am looking forward to a night of “jamming out” and having a little fun with the guys!

Night #2 (July 12th):
Night #2 will feature Doug Neel (guitar) with special guests Michael Shirtz (vocals), Danny Bauer (piano), John Allen (bass), and Maxwell Button (drums). This will be a night of “straight-ahead, American Songbook” offerings, and it will be my honor to share the stage with these fine young gentlemen!

Night #3 (July 19th):
Night #3 will feature Doug Neel (guitar) and his 5tet: Matt Adams (sax), Tony Bonardi (keys), Jeff Bass (bass), and Reggie Jackson (drums). The group will feature original compositions by Neel and Adams. This show will serve as the CD Release Party for my first album as a leader, entitled Balance! The group and I have already been living with these tunes for quite some time, and, after several months of hard work, I am VERY excited to present the final product! CD’s will be available for purchase at $10 per copy.

Night #4 (July 26th):
Night #4 will feature Doug Neel (trombone/guitar) and the return of ROCK SLIDE (formerly BRASS SESSION), a trombone quartet with rhythm section that specializes in arrangements of rock tunes. ROCK SLIDE features Doug Neel (trombone/guitar), Ryan Hamilton (trombone), Doug Moran (trombone), Matt Smith (bass trombone), Nick Labita (keys), Tony Zilincik (sousaphone), and Joe Nelson (drums). Come check out some of your favorite rock ‘n roll classics done in a “not-so-classic” fashion!
