Dick’s Den Residency: Joe Nelson

The Dick’s Den Wednesday Residency Program continues to heat up the middle of winter weeks in February with a slate led by Joe Nelson. Prolific drummer Nelson, active and respected in a variety of styles around the region, has programmed four shows highlighting projects old and new. His schedule includes musicians and material from around the country and the world, so this month’s lineup should be a treat. Music will start around 9pm each Wednesday, and cover is $5 for each show. Keep reading for band personnel and descriptions that Nelson was very kind to provide, and learn more about these diverse collaborations to be shared in the relaxed environment of “The One and Only.” Joe Nelson:

February 14th: Center Trio with Special Guests

Center Trio has a regular weekly gig 5 years going…we are tight as brothers. Four special guests will perform on vocals. Musical styles include Soul, Jazz, Rock, Pop, and some original compositions. This is a super fun group and there is typically a lot of dancing at our shows.

The last set is a special treat!! A hot new EDM project – Tingari – will play from 12:30 – 1:30. This will be quite trippy and the trio will join in on the fun. Especially great for those who love dancing and multi-dimensional expeditions.

Personnel: Tony Bonardi (keys), Steve Perakis (bass), Joe Nelson (drums), Chad Warren (vocals/guitar), Jesse Powers (vocals), Carisa Holmes (vocals/flute/percussion), Dawnzie Joy (vocals), Joel Wittaker (didgeridoo/percussion/beats).

February 21st: Afro-Brazilian Project

Week 3 will be this new project’s maiden voyage into rhythmic bliss and a long-time dream of mine! We focus on the Afro-Brazilian music of Salvador, Brazil and include 10 of Central Ohio’s top percussionists playing tight arrangements. That’s right, 10 percussionists!!! We will rock the foundation with this one. Music starts at 9:00 and goes until 1:00 but the large ensemble will perform 9:30 – 10:30. I dare anyone to come and NOT have a great time!

Personnel: Marcos Costa (vocals), Daniel Costa (bass), Zakk Jones (guitar), Jacob Campbell (keys), Joe Nelson (drums). The percussion ensemble consists of myself, Eric Paton, Justin Campbell, Maxwell Button, Max Marsillo, Josh Heber, Will Strickler, Matthew Dixon, Seth Alexander, and Antoine Fatout.
