The Dick’s Den Wednesday Residency Program roars into the second half of summer with a diverse August schedule led by drummer Josh Heber. Heber is involved with great area bands of many varieties and will showcase his different interests and collaborations with other talented musicians over the course of the month. Cover for each Wednesday’s show is $5 and start times are listed below. Heber was kind enough to provide details on each week’s show, keep reading to learn more and stop by Dick’s on a Wednesday or five in August for fun tunes! Josh Heber: “It is truly an honor to be among the long list of musicians in Columbus that have been involved with the residency. Dick’s Den is a special place for the city of Columbus. Special thanks for Tim, Aaron and all of the staff for keeping such a beautiful thing going!

Wednesday, August 1st at 9pm – Trio with Zakk Jones and John Allen
The first week will feature a trio with two of Columbus’ most talented and hardest working players, Zakk Jones on guitar and John Allen on upright bass. Our tightly knit music community gave me the opportunity to run into these guys and we are very excited to kick off the residency together. Selecting music from Julian Lage, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, and more as well as original music written by Zakk. These two expressive players shine brightly in a trio setting and it should be a colorful start to my residency.

August 8th at 10pm – Kinfolk
Kinfolk is a project I have patiently been working on that features a family of players that has been playing together in a variety of forms for several years. The music selection ranges from straight ahead jazz to contemporary neo-soul. We will play music from Robert Glasper, Miles Davis, Braxton Cooke, Moonchild as well as original material. Kinfolk features Stephanie Rogers on lead vocals, Robert Mason on keys, Will Strickler AND Jeff Bass on bass, Faheem Najieb on alto sax, Hayden Huffman on tenor sax, Ben Crowder on Trombone, and myself on drumset. Yes, you read that correctly, Jeff and Will will both be performing at this show and playing together on a selection of tunes. The music selected for this evening speaks deeply to me and I am very excited to be playing with it with this group of players.

August 15th at 10pm – Knot Brothers
Knot Brothers is a powerful band that will feature a large volume of original material as well as a bunch of fun covers. This group is rooted in bluegrass, rock’n’roll and funk music featuring Mark Gonzalez, James Wooster, Chris Swanson, Ryan Paradise and Steven Fox. Mark, James, and Chris are the songwriters and vocalists in the group while Ryan, Steve and I make complete the rhythm section. Featuring covers from The Wood Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Junior Brown, Grateful Dead and many more! This is the most established project that I am presenting for the residency and we hope to see a bunch of familiar faces!

August 22nd at 9pm – Heber 4TET
Given the opportunity to do a residency at Dick’s, I wanted to make sure I took full advantage. I approached Derek DiCenzo and asked if he would be willing to give some of his time. Being that Derek is a wealth of knowledge, I grew excited about the upcoming experience when he agreed so I asked Zakk Jones and Alex Burgoyne to be involved as they are both outstanding players. This group will be playing standards ranging from John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz and much more. This will be the second time this group has played, and it is an honor to play with these guys.

August 29th at 9:30pm – Midnight Orchid
Midnight Orchid is a project started by Kristen Marie in early 2018. Kristen did a great job putting together a very talented group featuring Kristin on Cello and lead vocals, Elaine Mylius on Trombone and backup vocals, Justin Dickson on Saxophone and flute, Wib Schneider on guitar, David Swank on keys, Willie Barthel III on bass and myself on drums and backup vocals. This group has a 70s funk sound mixed with jazz and rock’n’roll influence. It will also feature some original music written by Kristen. This is a great way to end what will be a fantastic August!”
