Dick's Den Residency: Tom Davis

The Dick’s Den Wednesday Residency program continues its jazzy spring with a May program curated by Tom Davis. The Ohio-bred, globally educated (Capital and University of Edinburgh in Scotland) guitarist is active with his own Trio, along with roles in Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra and other local bands. For his residency, Davis has assembled a lineup with some unique jazz performances and a soulful finale, and three of the four projects will be making their live debut. Each week’s show will run from 9pm to 1am (approximately), and the cover is $4. Davis was very kind to provide us with his thoughts on the different bands that will play each week:

A Tribute to the Paul Desmond/Jim Hall Quartets kicks off the residency on Wednesday, May 6th. With Davis on guitar, the evening’s band will also feature Alex Burgoyne (alto sax), Greg Wolfram (bass), and Dan DiPiero (drums). Davis: “I fell in love with this music at first listen. It is interactive, charming, and it swings with a seemingly effortless elegance. I’ve been playing and revising this book for years now and I’m really excited to bring it to Columbus.”

May 13th brings the Tom Davis Trio to the stage, with Greg Wolfram (bass) and Dan DiPiero (drums). Davis: “This show will be mostly original tunes… The target vibe is along the lines of Kenny Burrell’s trios. I’ll endeavor to perform all the tracks from my CD Home, as well as tunes written especially for this night.”

The May 20th show will feature The Ohio Swingtet. Davis: “This is an old school drummer-less quartet, featuring Jay Miglia (clarinet and bass clarinet), Colin Lazarski (rhythm guitar), and Derek Dicenzo (bass). The format and arrangements are borrowed from a great Edinburgh-based band I was hono(u)red to be a part of, Dick Lee’s Swingtet. The repertoire consists of swing-era tunes and original tunes/arrangements by the great woodwind artist, Dick Lee, as well as my own arrangements. I am VERY excited to bring this group to Columbus! In the words of Dick Lee, ‘If you liked World War 2 you’re gonna love this one.'”

The band for the May 27th finale of the residency is The Broadstreet Lineup. Davis: “This is my brand new band with Nate Shaw (keys/vocals), Greg Wolfram (bass/vocals), Ryan Folger (drums/vocals), and yours truly (guitar/vocals). Yep, we’re all singing. The music will be hits and b-sides from the “groovy” genre: Sly Stone, War, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Billy Cobham, Maceo Parker, William DeVaughn, etc… There’s even a few surprise treatments of songs from other genres in the mix. This music is meant for dancing, singing along, and having a great time!”
