Local musicians and educators Stan Smith and Roger Hines have been playing music together for over 40 years in Columbus, forming an almost telepathic bond over the course of their careers. Nova Madrugada, or “New Dawn” in Portugese, is their vehicle for playing unique original music and songs from the Brazilian tradition and beyond. Their monthly gig at Savor Pint continues, typically featuring talented students from Capital University where both Stan and Roger have been on faculty for almost as long as they’ve been here in Columbus.

Bobby Floyd Trio @ Blue Velvet Room – 6PM –  ($15, $5 for students)Not a lot needs to be said about Bobby and his trio. They’ve had a regular Sunday gig somewhere in town for a long time, and for good reason. The Blue Velvet Room and Bobby are a perfect pair, and with bandmates Derek DiCenzo (guitar) and Reggie Jackson (drums), this is a no brainer.

Wally Mitchell Jazztet – Dick’s Den

8pm (Free, every Sunday)

“The East Side Kid,” drummer Wally Mitchel, is a local main-stay of the Columbus scene. Wally leads his group every Sunday evening for a free, early-evening night of music at Dick’s Den. The present lineup usually includes Matt Paetsch on bass, Tony Bonardi on keyboards or Brett Burleson on guitar, and Matt Adams or Mark Donavan on saxophones. Look for a lively mix of later Jazz standards and originals.
