FLIPPO, one of Columbus’ newest “super groups,” displaying instrumental virtuosity and creative energy in the spirit of sonic colors and innovation born of the “funk” and “jazz/rock fusion” movements of the 1970’s and beyond, returns to Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza this Wednesday. The previous performance at Natalie’s included a night of Joni Mitchell featuring Kay Harris on vocals. This week’s performance features the band playing some of the funkiest and “fusion-laden” grooves of the past 30+ years.
The name of the band pays fond tribute to tenor saxophonist Bob Marvin who during the ascendancy of television appeared for many years entertaining central Ohio viewers as Flippo the Clown. A superb band was a regular and integral part of his shows. FLIPPO is Michael Cox on Sax, Paul Brown on guitar, Erik Augis on Keys, Andy Woodson on bass and Louis Tsamous on Drums.
For their first ever performance at Natalie’s, FLIPPO will be performing original music by members of the band, as well as music by some of their biggest inspirations, such as Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, Weather Report, and the Pat Metheny Group. Check out FLIPPO’s Facebook page for video, audio, and more information about the band.
