Now that the Central Ohio school year is about over, it’s time to start planning to take advantage of opportunities to further you or your children’s jazz education over the summer. The Jazz Arts Group’s Jazz Academy is offering two day camps for children and two night courses for adults, all focused on building jazz knowledge and skill in a variety of areas as well as increasing community jazz involvement. Local musicians and educators including Rachel Sepulveda, Tony Bonardi, Rob Parton, Pete Mills, Becky Ogden and Zach Compston plus many special guests will provide vocal, band, and introductory instruction to local students of all ages. For high school through adult with fundamental singing experience.
Have you ever dreamed of being the lead singer fronting a band? Well, now is your chance! Join Rachel and Tony as they explore the key components of singing with a combo, from stylizing to repertoire, from singing technique to communicating and performing with confidence. You will have the experience of singing jazz, pop, rock, R&B and beyond. You’ll also perform the song of your choice with a live trio during your 7 weeks singing solo and fronting the band!

For students with a minimum of 2 years of experience on their instrument – Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drum Set.
Columbus Youth Jazz Summer Workshop is an excellent opportunity for instrumentalists of all skill levels to hone their skills in the jazz language – improvisation, style, repertoire and technique. During this 5-day workshop you will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform in a combo and a big band while learning about jazz legends and their repertoire. Renowned trumpeter/educator Rob Parton (Chicago Symphony, Doc Severinsen, Tony Bennett) and some of Columbus’ finest instructors will host master classes and listening sessions and we will participate in a public performance on the final day. The CYJ Summer Workshop is your one stop for learning all things jazz!

The Columbus Community Jazz Band is the chance for anyone who has played an instrument to get back in the swing of things! Led by CJO saxophonist Pete Mills, you will have the chance to practice and perform fun arrangements of our favorite jazz tunes while developing your sound and technique. Additionally, the CCJB will perform live as the opening act for the Columbus Jazz Orchestra at JazZoo. All CCJO members will receive free admission to the JazZoo show that night, and an invitation backstage to meet the Columbus Jazz Orchestra members after the show!

DESCRIPTION:
Recommended for grades 3-5 – no instrumental music experience needed.
The “Jazz Cats” Half-Day camp is designed to be a fun and interactive immersion into the art of jazz and improvisation. During the week, we will discover the magic of improvisation in the style of jazz greats Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, and more. By the end of the week, all students will have learned how to play the blues, recognize famous jazz songs, play the drum set, and much more. No experience in music is needed – but all students will be “Jazz Cats” by the end of the week!
