Jazz Academy Music Making Opportunities This Spring/Summer

The Jazz Arts Group once again is providing some great music related classes this Spring and Summer. From the fundamentals of jazz to drumming 101, there are some fun and engaging classes for the young and old. Check out some of the details from the Jazz Arts Group:

NEW SERIES! – JAZZ ACADEMY SPOTLIGHT SERIES:
“In Walked Jazz: A Jazz Tale of the African-American Experience”
Wednesday, February 26, 7 PM

FREE ADMISSION in celebration of Black History Month! Join Columbus native Cedric Easton and his quartet in an exploration of African-American influences on our great American art form — jazz. This concert experience will celebrate the music of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and more combined with spoken word to captivate and evoke curiosity about the creative, cultural, and social significance of jazz. Following the concert, there will be a Q&A with the artists designed to create insightful dialogue about this important music. Register by clicking here

GUEST ARTIST WORKSHOP – Chris Thomas King
Saturday, March 1, 2 PM

Before the concert, King will lead a workshop titled “Blues Roots” at the Jazz Academy where he will introduce the roots of blues and jazz, including New Orleans jazz and delta slide guitar. He will discuss and perform some early forms on acoustic guitar and harmonica, then connect those forms and rhythms with contemporary musical styles, including pop and hip-hop. The workshop begins at 2:00 p.m. and there will be lots of time at the end for questions and discussion. Register by clicking here.

“Improvisation Lab” (Mar. 26 – Apr. 30, 7-9 PM)

What are the fundamentals of our favorite jazz solos? Explore the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements of jazz improvisation in a fun and interactive lab setting. From scales and chords to riffs and licks, we will jump inside the minds of our jazz greats and build our own unique solos! All ages are welcome. Two years of fundamental experience on an instrument is required. Register by clicking here.

“Session Drumming 101” (Mar. 26 – Apr. 30, 7-9 PM)

Every drummer dreams of playing for a recording session or recording his/her own band. In this course we will explore the fundamentals of session drumming from musicianship, tuning and equipment choice, playing with a click and more in this interactive lab. Each student will experience a real-life recording session that results in a finished song! All ages are welcome. Two years fundamental drum set experience is required. Register by clicking here.

Join us for a new workshop series titled “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” hosted by Byron Stripling. Join Byron for a casual and engaging conversation with the wonderful guest artists of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” provides participants a behind-the-scenes glimpse from the artist perspective on performing with the CJO – adding new perspective to being an audience member.
