JazzColumbus Weekly – August 15th, 2019

Before details on more great jazz in the sunshine (fingers crossed) – The Columbus Jazz Calendar for Saturday, August 17th is bursting with a variety of fun options! Carnaval Columbus featuring the Brazilian Hemispheres Band gets started at 8pm at Woodland’s Backyard (Grandview area) – tickets and details here. The Woodstock 50 by Columbus celebration at The Valley Dale Ballroom runs from 3:30pm to midnight and includes a performance by Urban Jazz Coalition’s Sly Stone Tribute at 9:30pm – tickets and details here. Also at 9:30pm, groove masters fo/mo/deep return to Natalie’s for a funky getdown – limited tickets here. And at 10pm, the Linda Dachtyl Trio featuring Don Hales and Cary Dachtyl gets their soulful organ jazz going at Dick’s Den for a bargain $5 cover – you can also hear Linda’s organ there the night before with the multi-talented Chip Willis. Outdoor Jazz

The schedule for Friday, August 16th includes the final Columbus Youth Jazz Summer Jam Session at State Auto’s Pein Park Downtown at Noon (info here) and the first day of the Columbus Food Truck Festival on the Scioto Mile includes pop interpreters The Big Badd at 6:30pm (festival website). Your jazz option at the Food Truck Festival for Saturday, August 17th is jazzy torch blues provocateurs Anna & the Consequences at 2pm. The robust outdoor schedule for Sunday, August 18th includes the annual appearance by Dixieland all-stars High Street Stompers at Inniswood Metro Gardens in Westerville at 3pm, New Orleans-based funky fusion from Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue at the WonderBus Festival at the Lawn at Chemical Abstracts at 6:25pm (tickets required, info here), a rousing family friendly dose of big band from the Rick Brunetto Big Band Ice Cream Concert at Weldon’s Ice Cream in Millersport (Buckeye Lake) at 7pm, and the soulful sounds of Kinfolk for the Third Sunday Summer Concert Series at Frank Fetch Park in German Village at 7pm.

There are still chances for midweek fun in the sun! Wednesday, August 21st offers Latin jazz powerhouse Yumbambe at Easton Town Center’s Sounds on The Town series at 6pm (series info here), which is also when guitar maestro Tom Carroll plays his weekly patio gig, which continues through September, at the historic Granville Inn. Hot options for Thursday, August 22nd include an appearance by high-powered jazz-pop outfit Hot Tonic as part of the first annual Music at the Yard series at First Avenue Park in Grandview (info here) and the weekly patio appearance by Mark & Rene Goodwin at Annie’s Wine Cottage in Powell at 7:30pm, this time with guitar master Paul Brown.
