As the calendar moves to August, the Outdoor Jazz season is sizzling! On Thursday, August 1st at 6pm, the Beer Garden Music Series at Land-Grant Brewing Company in Franklinton continues with an amazing free concert. Drummer James Gaiters’ Quartet features a regional all-star lineup, with bassist John Allen playing his last public jazz gig in town before moving to Nashville, guitarist Dan Wilson coming down from Akron, and Indianapolis’ “Musical Mayor” Rob Dixon completing the foursome on saxophone (series details here)! On Friday, August 2nd there are two great open air options: The Summer Sizzle Concert Series at George Edge Music Park in Grove City features the soulful Latin sounds of the Russell Blue Band at 7pm (info here), and the JazZoo series at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium presents “Smooth Jazz for a Hot Summer Night” with saxophone and flute virtuoso Nelson Rangell, 2019 Hank Marr Award co-winners saxophonist Devin Coons and trumpeter Miles Smith, and your Columbus Jazz Orchestra at 8pm, with Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra opening at 6:45pm (series details here).
On Saturday, August 3rd at 7:30pm, the Local ‘n Live series at the Campus Gateway Beer Garden features the guitar stylings of the Alex Schrock Trio (info here). On Sunday, August 4th at 7pm, the Hilliard Summer Concert Series rolls on with timeless vocalist Tia Harris and her band at the Norwich St. Gazebo at 7pm (info here).
Along with a handful of fun weekly hangs, there are two big midweek chances to enjoy summer evenings with great live jazz. On Wednesday, August 7th at 6pm, Easton Town Center’s Sounds on The Town Series features the mighty smooth jazz grooves of the Urban Jazz Coalition, riding high with new release Covers (series details here). And on Thursday, August 8th at 6pm, enjoy the big band power of Swings The Thing Big Band at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Parish Festival in Whitehall (info here).
