Before our weekly rundown of great jazz under the sun, we have details on a great show benefiting an excellent cause. On Saturday, August 24th at 7pm, a Benefit for Griffin Clark gets underway at Zaftig Brewing Co near Worthington. Griffin Clark was an Otterbein music major who was involved in an unfortunate accident this past Spring. This concert is to benefit him and his family to help cover medical costs for his on-going care. The band for the evening will include regular members of the house band for their Thursday jam session (The Brewtet) Korey Black on Baritone Sax and Paul Baker on Bass, plus more great area musicians: Jay Miglia – Sax, Kai Hennacy – Trumpet, Richard Hennacy – Guitar, Dean Marcellana – Piano, and Andrew Richard – Drums. Baker tells me “There may be other surprise guests joining us” and “We’ll also be raffling an acoustic guitar and gift certificates for CJO concerts! As well as other prizes from Zaftig. All proceeds go directly to the Travis-Clark family.” Donations accepted at the door. More details here on this community event. Keep reading for info on outdoor jazz this weekend!
Outdoor Jazz
As the area heads back to school, the outdoor schedule is more compact but still full of family friendly fun. Friday, August 23rd includes a Westerville 4th Fridays appearance by Milo Mannino’s North Columbus Big Band featuring Cherie Mannino on the Westerville City Hall Lawn at 6:30pm (info here), and the African American Cultural Festival gets underway at Mayme Moore Park in King-Lincoln Bronzeville, including an appearance by Urban Jazz Coalition’s Tribute to Sly and the Family Stone at 7:30pm (festival info here). The African American Cultural Festival continues on Saturday, August 24th, and the lineup includes a performance by Mark Lomax at 1:30pm. Also Saturday, the Swings The Thing Big Band makes its annual appearance for Party at the Park at Huntington Park at 5:30pm ahead of the Clippers game – admission free with a game ticket! Two more fun options on Sunday, August 25th: The Beer Garden Music Series at Land-Grant Brewing Company in Franklinton features a swinging band for its last jazz concert of the season – The Pete Mills B3 Organ 4tet with Jon Eshelman at 3pm (series info here)! And at 4:30pm, the 2019 Bexley Jazz in the Park Series wraps up with the timeless Dixieland of the High Street Stompers at Havenwood Park. Get out and enjoy!
Have a great week!
