Labor Day is already upon us! The Outdoor Jazz schedule is appropriately swinging for the occasion. On Saturday, September 1st from 9:30 to 11:30am, Anna Paolucci’s Strings n Tings project presents a variety of family friendly entertainment at the Clintonville Farmers’ Market. Also Saturday, Swings The Thing Big Band makes its annual appearance in the Party in the Park series at Huntington Park at 5:40pm – admission is included with your ticket to the 7:05 pm Columbus Clippers game (more details here). On Sunday, September 2nd at 11:30am, guitarist Doug Neel will be joined by fellow guitarist Ryan O’Shaughnessy on the patio for his weekly brunch appearance at the Market District Kitchen & Bar in Bexley. On Sunday at 5pm, Swings The Thing Big Band stays busy with a performance at the St. Michael Parish Festival in Worthington. And there’s a special rarity that night if you want to make a holiday weekend drive: Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra plays a Dance Party at Ariel-Foundation Park in Wiester’s hometown of Mount Vernon at 7:30pm – see another side of the FJO that isn’t often on display at the Clintonville Woman’s Club! Finally, on Tuesday, September 4th at 11:30am, the Lunchbox Concert Series continues with a traditional jazz set from The Ramblers on the lawns of Westerville City Hall.

Friday, August 31st (9:30pm – 12:30am): The Velvet Sirens Residency at Club Diversity. After traveling for the first half of 2018, Columbus’ own “Eclectic Cabaret Jazz and Bohemian Torch Swing Duo” of Jesse Chandler and Michael Kaplan returned home and started a monthly residency in July at this cozy Brewery District nightspot. More from the band: “Jesse and Michael will be playing favorites and originals from The Velvet Sirens Songbook so stop by for great music and great drinks. Saturday, September 1st (9pm – 1am): Rhythmic Fusion at The Idle-A-While Supper Club, East Side. Antuan Walker, Musical Director and Keyboardist for vocalist Angie Stone who recently returned to Columbus after a European Tour with Ms. Stone, leads this high-powered modern fusion outfit that is now a fixture at The Idle-A-While. Come for some serious grooves recommended for fans of Snarky Puppy, and also enjoy top-notch food and drink. More details here. Walker and Rhythmic Fusion also kickoff their weekly Smooth & Soulful Sunday Brunch series on Sunday, September 16th at 2pm at the venue, and lead the weekly jam session there on Wednesdays at 9pm. The Sunday Music Series at this venerable Spanish-inspired fine dining destination regularly offers a wide variety of great live jazz and more. This week, outstanding keyboardist Mason brings his Hammond organ to the stage, accompanied by the highly talented James Gaiters on drums and Eddie Bayard and tenor saxophone.
