Tops on our list of Shows To See This Week is a rare appearance by a long-running source of eclectic and ecstatic ensemble jazz. On Saturday, January 12th at 10pm, Honk, Wail & Moan returns for a show at Dick’s Den. Admission is $5. Founded in 1991, the band still plays today with a talented selection of musicians based in Columbus and beyond. The band will tackle tunes by original HW&M member Brian Casey, plus Sun Ra, Charles Mingus and more. Drop on by “The One and Only” Saturday to see the next installment of a Columbus jazz tradition – this band has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Friday, January 11th (6:30 – 9:30pm): Richard Lopez Trio at Black Point. With the new year, a standardized and slightly earlier schedule has arrived at this Short North home of top-notch trio jazz. Along with a monthly rotation of great vocal groups on Saturdays at 7pm – check the Columbus Jazz Calendar for details – Friday nights now feature a weekly appearance by three of Columbus’ finest veteran musicians. Subject to members’ schedules, each week pianist Lopez will be joined by bassist Roger Hines and drummer Aaron Scott. Enjoy excellent food and drink accompanied by classic jazz with an international flair. Visit the Black Point website for reservation information.
Wednesday, January 16th (9 – 11pm): Waves de Aché: Tribute to Paquito D’Rivera at Natalie’s. Led by bassist Will Strickler and percussionist Max Marsillo, this Latin-tinged musical melting pot will be celebrating the music of renowned Cuban saxophonist D’Rivera. The band has greatly impressed me to date, both live and on their 2018 live EP, so I think it’s safe to say this will be an exciting and passionate night of fiery rhythms and musicality. Tickets and more info are available here.
