First on our list of Shows To See This Week is a newly announced happy hour barn burner! After a stop in Cincinnati Thursday, the OH-NY Connection Quintet, featuring trumpeter John Lake and saxophonist Steve Kortyka, plays Brothers Drake on Friday, March 15th from 6 to 8pm. Lake provided more info on the show: “Two Ohio natives, now living in New York City, are in Columbus for a night of contemporary jazz music. John Lake and Steve Kortyka both attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and are returning to the Buckeye State to reconnect with their Midwestern musical roots. John Lake is a trumpet player and composer living in Brooklyn, New York, where he maintains a busy performance schedule as a jazz soloist and in-demand lead trumpet player. Based out of Queens, New York, Steve Kortyka is an accomplished saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator currently working on his next studio album. In addition to their many solo efforts and sideman engagements, John and Steve co-lead the New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece big band, which has featured artists such as Peter Bernstein, Dick Oatts, and Terell Stafford.” Keep reading for details on a birthday jam and a release party!
