JazzColumbus Weekly – May 31st, 2018

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day! Outdoor Jazz season is now in full bloom with a plethora of options on Saturday, June 2nd. At 9:30am, vocalist Anna Paolucci’s Strings n Tings project makes its roughly monthly appearance at the Clintonville Farmers’ Market – This time its rotating cast includes bassist Robert Sobnosky, vocalist/cellist Sara Smith and saxophonist Anthony Jackson. The second annual African-American Cultural Festival returns to the King-Lincoln District and kicks off at 11am – the music lineup includes jazz performances by fo/mo/deep at 1pm, Liquid Crystal Project at 4pm and Bobby Floyd at 5:30pm – full details are available here. Jeni’s Strawberry Jam hits Land-Grant Brewing in Franklinton – see traditional jazz outfit The Ramblers open the varied schedule at 1pm, followed by jazz-pop powerhouse The Emily Syring Band at 2pm – full lineup and details here. Shows To See This Week

Friday, June 1st (9pm – 1:30am): Salsa Night with Al Son del Iyá at Brothers Drake. Columbus’ own salsa-jazz powerhouse is hosting the second installment of its monthly Salsa Night for the warmer months of 2018. Come ready to dance, with help from DJs and real live grooves from Al Son del Iyá – Expect “the best of old school and new school salsa, Latin Jazz, and merengue bachata!” With drummer Justin Campbell in the lineup, there is “GOOD MUSIC GUARANTEED,” so how can you lose?

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. See Urban Jazz Coalition play Friday at 8pm at The Idle-A-While! Saturday, June 2nd (7 – 10pm): Emerald City Cabaret featuring Urban Jazz Coalition at Northland Performing Arts Center (NPAC). Columbus’ own smooth jazz powerhouse maintains its busy schedule with its second appearance of the weekend. This special event, presented by charity organization A.C.T.I.O.N. for Jeanette, benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with activities that include dinner, drinks, raffles and more alongside world-class live smooth jazz. Sunday, June 3rd (8 – 10pm): Soul Sunday: Talisha Holmes Ensemble at Natalie’s. The wonderful Soul Sunday series continues to present a wide variety of soulful music hosted by Paisha Thomas on the first Sunday night of each month. This month’s concert features the return of a beloved Columbus vocalist – Talisha Holmes. Now based in Nashville, Holmes returns home this weekend for an evening of her new originals and her favorites from other great artists. Her all-star band for the evening features Robert Riley, Lisa Bella Donna, Brandon ‘B-jazz’ Scott and Monique Mitchell, and the evening’s food menu will be topped by a “Soul Food” special created just for the series.
