Happy Thanksgiving, jazz fans! I’m coming to you a day early this week to make sure you’re informed before settling down with family and food for the holiday weekend. There’s not much on my news radar this week, so let’s jump into my highlights for upcoming live jazz.
Shows To See This Week
Wednesday, Nov. 27th: Birdshack with Amelia Bango-McClung at Brothers Drake. This trio of local heavyweights makes an appearance as part of Brothers Drake’s Jazz Wednesdays. As mentioned here last week, Birdshack is hot off of their recording of some live videos and is hopefully building toward a debut album? The meadery should provide an excellent setting for their subtly nuanced tunes.
Wednesday, Nov. 27th: FLIPPO at Natalie’s. “One of Columbus, Ohio’s newest Jazz/Rock Fusion ‘super groups,'” this lively quintet will help kick off the holiday weekend with their rousing takes on jazz innovations born of the 1970s fusion and jazz-funk movements.
Thursday, Nov. 28th: Joe Ong at Dick’s Den. Holiday evenings are always a treat at Dick’s, and the tradition will continue this Thanksgiving with venerable drummer Ong and his group.
Friday, Nov. 29th: Carl Sally and Friends at Natalie’s. The Jazz Hall of Fame saxophonist and Columbus native will entertain with material from 50+ years of jazz. Here’s a preview I wrote for a similar show back in the spring.
Saturday, Nov. 30th: Derek DiCenzo at Dick’s Den. Fresh from some trio gigs backing Bobby Floyd, this always entertaining guitarist will keep the holiday vibe going with his group.
