JazzColumbus Weekly – November 7th, 2019

Kicking off the 6th anniversary of my JazzColumbus Weekly column (!) is details on another fun weekend in the cozy confines of Filament at The Vanderelli Room (Franklinton). After a newly announced performance by the prodigious pair of the Logan Moore/Paul Strawser Duo providing “intimate, totally acoustic jazz/improvised music” on Saturday, November 9th at 9pm (more info here), On a Limb, the latest in a series of Cincinnati’s finest ensembles to play Filament, hits the stage Sunday, November 10th at 7pm. “Cincinnati-based trio On a Limb released their first studio album in January 2019. Pianist Andrew Haug is the primary composer and arranger for the group, writing for the specific musical personalities of bassist Noah Simionides and drummer Charlie Schefft. His compositional style has been described by fellow musicians as ‘honest and thoughtful, beautiful yet energetic, with a hint of mysteriousness and darkness.’ Having crafted a sound that reflects a wide range of influences, their dynamic interplay is uniquely identifiable.” More info here. Keep reading for a swingin’ Veterans Day dance with Cyndi Black Big Band and what’s next at Brothers Drake!

Sunday, November 10th (7:30 – 10pm): Cyndi Black Big Band Veterans Day Ball: Salute to the 1940’s WWII Big Bands at Clintonville Woman’s Club. Cyndi Black Big Band, one of Columbus’ longest-running bands – since 1985 (!) – plays its final monthly fall show by honoring Veterans Day with a Swing Dance of epic proportions! Tickets are available here. More info from the band:

Enjoy the warmth and nostalgia of a more simple time! It’s a whole evening of music from the WWII Years. We’ll start out with a set of all Glenn Miller… then move on to Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Xavier Cougat, and more. Go retro… dance like it’s 1940… Jitterbug, Lindy Hop, Swing, Rumba, and Foxtrot (It’s also fun to come just to listen and watch the great dancers).

This Week at Brothers Drake – Wednesday, November 13th

Alex Burgoyne: “This week at the Brothers Drake, beautyofmyland, who is the art maker, poet, singer Dairdre Scriven.

In Dairdre’s words, beautyofmyland is:

‘A fusion of awesomeness- jazz, soul, and funky blues.

To me music is like how a functioning community could sound, through the musicians various opinions, cultures, and perspectives. Or better yet; it’s like an orgy, because of the amount of self autonomy, along with awareness, and care for the other fellow humans involved.’

beautyofmyland is poetry and free improvisation and groove and communication and expression. I’ve never participated in it, nor heard it the same way twice, so don’t miss it! beautyofmand is Dairdre Scriven, voice, Sarah Smith on bass, Andre Walker on drums and few surprise musicians.

Jazz Wednesday at Brothers Drake. 8:00-11:00PM. Free as always. You mead it.”

Have a great week!
