JazzColumbus Weekly – November 8th, 2018

Last month Columbus-based guitarist Alex Schrock released a new live trio album, Live at BLU Jazz+, which is available for preview and purchase here. Recorded in June at Blu Jazz+ in Akron, the album showcases Schrock’s trio, with bassist Bradley Mellen and drummer Anthony Taddeo, in fine form. The album is a well-rounded and well-mastered (by Aaron Oakley) collection of timeless standards in a new light, like “Some Day My Prince Will Come” and “Blue Train,” plus finely crafted originals. The album features an epic take on Schrock’s “Sunflowers (Mikaeri Bijin),” which slowly builds from guitar explorations into a fiery climax, and classic-minded opening track “Turnaround.” The Alex Schrock Trio, featuring Mellen on bass and Nathan Parker on drums, plays Dick’s Den on Saturday, November 10th at 10pm. Schrock tells me this is his last trio show until the spring, and wraps up a summer that included trio shows in Akron, Cincinnati, Youngstown, Detroit, and Louisville, so catch the band’s “mix of standards, not so well known standards and originals” while you have the chance! Cover is $5. Keep reading for previews of Trutone at Oliver’s and Aubrey Logan at Natalie’s.

More Shows To See This Week

Saturday, November 10th (7:30 – 10:30pm): Trutone at Oliver’s, Downtown. This lively blues venue and restaurant has been bringing in more jazz-leaning acts in recent months, including Saturday’s show featuring talented Columbus musicians playing a mix of smooth jazz, blues and R&B. The band is usually led by vocalist Lady Nikki Scott, but she’s on her annual show cruise with Priscilla Woodson and Bobby Floyd, so Cherie Mannino will join in on vocals. The lineup also includes Tony Cooper on guitar, Bo Dixon on keyboards, Fred Dulaney on drums, Duane Gaskins on bass, and Bob Bowers on trumpet. More details available here. The band recently hit the recording studio, so stay tuned for more news.

Sunday, November 11th (8 – 10pm): Aubrey Logan at Natalie’s. Touring trombonist and vocalist Logan brings her live show to the home of coal-fired pizza and great live music in Columbus. EDIT: Now sold out! More info from Natalie’s:
