JazzColumbus Weekly – October 10th, 2019

The last major weekend for Outdoor Jazz this year is upon us, courtesy of the 2019 Columbus Italian Festival! “Celebrating Italian Heritage since 1980,” this annual festival continues its tradition of a strong jazz element on its entertainment stages on Friday evening, October 11th; all day Saturday, October 12th; and Sunday afternoon, October 13th. As usual, the Rick Brunetto Big Band will be front and center paired with talented Italian vocalists – the RBBB performs with Austin Giorgio Friday and Saturday at 7pm, and with The Sicilian Tenors Saturday at 9pm and Sunday at 5:30pm. The festival jazz schedule also includes Dr. Zoot Friday at 9pm and Brian Michael Smith with the John Vermeulen Octet Sunday at 2pm. Shows To See This Week

Friday, October 11th (8 – 10pm): Stan Smith: Music from Earth to Beyond at Streetlight Guild, Near East Side. Master guitarist and educator Smith assembles a high-powered ensemble for an exciting performance at this bustling hub for urban creativity. Smith will be joined by Bryan Olsheski on saxophone, Gregory “The Governor” Pearson on drums, Steve Perakis on bass and Paisha Thomas on vocals. Prepare for an improvised journey beyond terrestrial and extraterrestrial restraints. Admission is $8 at the door, more details here.

Sunday, October 13th (3 – 5pm): Bungalow Jazz with Kelly Delaveris and the Phil DeGreg Trio at Becky’s Barn, Delaware. Becky Ogden’s series of house concerts continues to provide memorable jazz moments at her new country home at 5137 Riverside Drive in Delaware. Sunday’s concert presents the return of beloved vocalist Delaveris, who will be backed by Cincinnati pianist Phil DeGreg plus Andy Woodson on bass and Aaron Scott on drums for what will surely be a slate of timeless and worldly classic jazz. Wednesday, October 16th (9 – 11pm): Pete Mills Quartet with special guest Dwight Adams – Side One Series: Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil” at Natalie’s. Saxophonist Mills brings back his Side One Series for a special night digging deep into a jazz classic – Wayne Shorter’s monumental 1964 album “Speak No Evil.” The leader will be joined by CJO bandmate Dwight Adams on trumpet, plus bassist George DeLancey, Erik Augis on piano and Zach Compston on drums.
