First up in our list of Shows To See This Week is the kickoff to a big jazz weekend at one of the area’s finest jazz venues! On Friday, October 4th at 9:30pm, our own fusion supergroup FLIPPO returns to Natalie’s with its Tribute to Weather Report. Tickets and info are available here. Along with heavy tunes popularized by the legendary fusion outfit led by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, “FLIPPO will also be performing original music by members of the band, as well as music by some of their other inspirations, such as Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, and Pat Metheny.” There is more great music at Natalie’s this weekend (click links for tickets/info): Dick Mackey Quintet on Saturday at 9:30pm, Soul Sunday Brunch with Derek DiCenzo Trio on Sunday at 11am, and Soul Sunday: Talisha Holmes on Sunday at 8pm! Saturday, October 5th (8 – 11pm): Mary McClendon at Blu Note Jazz Cafe, East Side. A lively new option for weekend jazz has recently entered the picture, as the Blu Note Jazz Cafe at 2882 E. Main Street is now starting its second full month of programming. The restaurant and venue has already presented some of the area’s finest musicians, and October’s schedule is another strong one! After smooth jazz titans NexLevel hit Friday, Saturday features esteemed vocalist Mary McClendon and a cracking group of Kevin Turner on guitar, George DeLancey on bass, and James Gaiters on drums! Get your tickets now for what looks to be a magical night!
Sunday, October 6th (5:30 – 8pm): House Jazz Concert Series with George DeLancey at Clintonville Woman’s Club. Dave Powers’ annual series of intimate and relaxed concerts at the Woman’s Club returns for a new year with another great guest. Bassist and Cambridge, OH native DeLancey is in town from New York City and will join Powers and drummer Louis Tsamous for a fun night of tunes. More info here for big swing and good times!
