JazzColumbus Weekly – September 5th, 2019

While Labor Day has passed and area schools are back in session, the Outdoor Jazz schedule for the first full weekend of September is very strong! The top source for outdoor jazz and much more this weekend is the venerable Hot Times Festival, held on the lawns of the Columbus Health Department at 240 Parsons Avenue in Olde Towne East. The diverse music schedule presented on 3 stages includes Saturday, September 7th appearances by trumpeter Robert Parish’s Bee Humana at 5pm and modern jazz-pop act Hot Tonic at 9pm. The festival offers plenty of live jazz on Sunday, September 8th: Glen Echo Saxophone Quartet (Noon), Chief Johnny Lonesome (1pm), Darchelle Williams (2pm), James “Smooth” Elliott & The Gene Walker Tribute Band (2pm), Anna Paolucci & Friends (3pm) and fo/mo/deep (4:15pm). Other options for Saturday include straight-ahead vocalist Kelly McLennan at Festival For Good in Franklinton at 11:45am (info), classic vocal jazz from Just Jazz Live Duo at Autumn Rush Vineyard in Johnstown at 6pm (info), and a primetime Columbus Soul Festival appearance by Urban Jazz Coalition with star saxophonist Marion Meadows in Genoa Park at 6pm (tickets). On Sunday at 1pm, catch the high-powered opener of the 2019 Harrison West Jazz Stage at Harrison Park: The Randy Mather Quartet featuring Jeanette Williams (series details)! Friday, September 6th (7:30 – 10pm): Tony Hagood Presents: Disney Jazz for Adults at McConnell Arts Center. After a successful 2018-19 campaign, Hagood returns with a six concert Jazz at the MAC schedule for the new season! This event for the young at heart celebrates classic movie tunes with a star-studded cast: Rachel Sepulveda – Vocals, Jim Powell – Horns, Michael Cox – Reeds, Tony Hagood – Piano, Bradley Mellen – Bass and Zach Compston – Drums. Hear “songs like ‘A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes,’ ‘Let it Go,’ ‘The Bare Necessities,’ ‘Circle of Life,’ ‘Hakuna Matata,’ ‘Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat,’ 101 Dalmatians opening theme song, songs from Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story and more.” Tickets are going fast – get yours here!

Saturday, September 7th (8 – 10pm): Pat Metheny: Side-Eye at the Southern Theatre. Guitar legend “Metheny is launching a new playing environment called “Side Eye” for this upcoming season. Pat explains, ‘I wanted to create an ongoing setting to feature a rotating cast of new and upcoming musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way.'” This edition of Side Eye will feature James Francies (keyboards, piano) and drummer Marcus Gilmore.
