Saxophonist and composer, Ken Messer, will bring his group The Phoenix Project to Dick’s Den this Thursday to celebrate the release of their new album “Tsunami”. “Tsunami” is an ambitious two CD set presenting an hour and a half of music ranging from raucous to restful; a Tidal Wave of Musical Energy sweeping aside everything in its path. “Tsunami” offers a galvanizing and varied musical listening experience for Central Ohio Jazz fans.
The Phoenix Project is
Ken Messer Saxophones and Theremin as well as all compositions
Stan Smith – Guitar
Aaron Quinn – Guitar
Brad Mellon – Six String Electric Cello
Ted Royalty – Vibraphone and Steel Drums
Roger Hines – Bass
Geoff Sullivan – Drums
Joe Nelson – Percussion
The Phoenix Project features high energy interplay between all its members. Aaron and Stan are virtually telepathic in their playing. Brad Mellon’s Cello adds an indescribable depth to the proceedings. Ted Royalty’s Vibes and a cool sheen to things one minute, while his steel drums add a strong sense of African Kwela to the music.
With the Phoenix Project, one minute is orchestral and the next as screaming hot as Jazz Fusion groups like Weather Report and Return to Forever. There is also an element of Trance Music with what the band creates similar to the musical ambiance of composers like Brian Eno.
