Jazz violinist Christian Howes grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied classically from the age of five, performing as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at age 16 and later receiving his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the Ohio State University.
Nominated recently “Violinist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association, Christian was voted first place in the 2011 Downbeat Critics Poll (rising stars/jazz violin). The Minneapolis Tribune calls Christian “arguably the most intriguing young violinist in jazz.” He performs worldwide with his own ensembles and as a guest soloist with orchestras and bands, and is widely regarded as one of the leaders in jazz violin.
His performances are often accompanied by educational outreach activities. Formerly an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music, Christian helps string players and teachers expand into improvisation, composition and go beyond the constraints of classical music training. He founded the Creative Strings Academy, an online school for improvising on jazz violin, cello, viola, and bass. He also offers the annual Creative Strings Workshop, a week-long workshop where string players can learn jazz and improvisation.
Christian Howes String Productions provides affordable string arrangements and remote, online string recording for albums, commercials, films, video games, and more. We also provide remote tracking of other instruments, score preparation, orchestration, transcription and more. Our clients include top producers and composers worldwide.
His most recent album, “Southern Exposure”, is available on his website at the shop.
