A top destination for great food, drinks and enticing live jazz, Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza and Live Music is celebrating its fifth anniversary this week. The Worthington restaurant and venue is presenting a week-long schedule of concerts to honor the occasion, which closes with a doubleheader featuring some of Columbus’ best jazz talent. Music on Sunday, August 6th starts at 2:30pm with the latest installment in the monthly Gospel Soul Brunch series hosted by Debra James Tucker. The special program “Old Landmark: Traditional Gospel Songs” features renowned vocalists Tucker, Tia Harris and Vicki Saunders singing great gospel material backed by a band of Jon Eshelman on keyboards, Roger Hines on bass and Reggie Jackson on drums. Tickets and more info are available here. The evening’s 9pm show brings back Whirlybirds, an energetic and swingin’ sextet with a repertoire of original “swang” tunes and timeless favorites. I had a great time seeing them in June – they are led by Natalie’s employee Joe Gilliland, and fellow employee Troy Kunkler will be featured on drums for this show. Tickets and more info are available here. Keep reading for more details.
Natalie’s has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to hosting the best in Columbus area, national and international jazz artists on its stage, which has been an incredible addition to the area jazz scene since the venue’s opening in 2012 (click here to revisit our interview around the opening with owner Charlie Jackson). Click here for info on all of the week’s events that cover the wide variety of genres enjoyed at the venue – some of these concerts find Columbus jazz musicians showcasing their abilities in other genres. “We will again have some limited edition Anniversary Posters designed by our good friends at the graphic design company Alison Rose, and, for the first time, we will sell a limited number of a new Anniversary Edition comic book featuring a selection of the best panels and comic strips created for our monthly Music Calendar by the talented illustrator Matt Wyatt. This full color book will also include a bonus comic strip telling our ‘Origin Story.’ These items will be available for purchase individually while supplies last, and as a special promotion, anyone who purchases advance tickets to at least 3 Anniversary shows during the week will be given complimentary copies of both the Poster and the Comic Book! Matt and Michael Neno will be at Natalie’s this Friday from 4 until 7 to promote the book.”
Stop by to enjoy great music, art, food and drink – and congratulate Natalie, Charlie and the staff on five great years. Here’s to many more!
