The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus is proud to present an evening of music from award-winning jazz musician and NEA Jazz Master, David Liebman and his quartet. As part of its Inside Track concert series, JAG will bring a bit of New York City to Vonn Jazz Supperclub for two shows (7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.) on tonight, November 2.
David Liebman is considered a renaissance man in contemporary music with a career that has spanned over four decades — beginning in the 1970s as the saxophone/flautist in both the Elvin Jones and Miles Davis Groups, continuing as a leader since. He has played on nearly 350 recordings with over 100 under his leadership or co-leadership. In jazz education he is a renowned lecturer and author of several milestone books: Self Portrait of a Jazz Artist, A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody, and Developing a Personal Saxophone Sound, translated into several languages, in addition to teaching DVDs, journalistic contributions to periodicals and published chamber music.
A longtime contributor to the advancement of jazz, Liebman was awarded the prestigious NEA Masters of Jazz Award for 2011, the highest honor America bestows on jazz artists. He is also a multiple Grammy nominee and has been inducted into the International Jazz Educators Hall of Fame. He has consistently placed in the top three places for Soprano Saxophone in the Downbeat Critic’s Poll since 1973, winning first place in both the Downbeat and Jazz Times Critic’s Poll in 2011.
