Nova Madrugada Monthly at Savor Pint

Bassist and educator extraordinaire Roger Hines recently checked in about a new monthly gig for one of his longest-running ensembles. Hines tells me that Nova Madrugada will be playing the first Thursday of every month 7-10pm at Savor Pint, 4440 Indianola Avenue, Columbus, OH 43214 in Clintonville. Their next gig is Thursday, November 7th. Currently consisting of Stan Smith on guitar, Hines on bass, and Antoine Fatout on drums, Nova Madrugada has a storied history in the Columbus jazz scene. Keep reading for more from Hines on the background of the group and its current lineup.

Roger Hines: “Stan and I are Professors at Capital University Conservatory of Music in the Jazz Studies Department. We both began playing music in local Columbus clubs in the early 70’s. No local college had a jazz degree at that time so we learned from the older wiser musicians who we played with in the clubs. Capital was one of the first colleges to offer a Music degree in Jazz Studies in the country, thanks to Columbus Jazz Arts Group founder Ray Eubanks.

We are now bringing our Capital students back the other direction out of the classroom to play with live with us in this venue. Expect to hear them joining us on our gig each month at Savor Pint.

Antoine and Stan both studied at Berklee School of Music in Boston that also had a early Jazz Program on the east coast that helped it become possible at Capital here in Columbus to do it too. I played in clubs and studied Theory as an Undergraduate and then got a Masters Degree in Classical music, both at The Ohio State University, then on to my Doctorate degree from the Ray Charles school of music and hard knocks on the road.

Please come out this Thursday, November 7th 7-10pm to hear us at Savor Pint in Clintonville.”
