The Ohio State University School of Music presents the 33rd Annual Jazz Festival Thursday, April 15 through Sunday, April 18, 2010 in Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Rd., on campus. The Festival brings together OSU Jazz bands, high school jazz bands, workshops, and renowned guest artists over the four days. Here is the schedule of events with information on guest jazz artists…
Ohio State Jazz Festival Schedule
Thursday, April 15th
Opening this year’s festival is a concert by the Marcus Strickland Trio, with Kenyatta Beasley, trumpet on trumpet, on Thursday, April 15 at 8 p.m. in Weigel Hall. Strickland, a jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist, was named “Rising Star, Soprano Saxophone” in Downbeat magazine’s Critic’s Poll in 2008 and “Best New Jazz Artist” in 2006 by Jazz Times. Beasley joined the School of Music faculty last fall. He has had a successful career performing with major artists such as Wyclef Jean, P.Diddy, Usher, and Gladys Knight and has won awards for numerous film scores.

Friday, April 16th
The award-winning Ohio State University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ted McDaniel, takes the stage on Friday, April 16 at 8 p.m. in Weigel Auditorium.

Saturday, April 17th
The Anthony Wonsey Quartet featuring Keith Loftis, saxophones, performs on Saturday, April 17 at 8 p.m. in Weigel Auditorium. Wonsey, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, has toured with such artists as Christopher Holiday, Nnenna Freelon, and Kenny Garrett. Loftis, a recipient of the IAJE’s “Outstanding Musician and Soloist Award,” has performed with the Benny Carter Big Band, The Frank Foster Loud Minority Big Band, The Four Tops, and Temptations.

Sunday, April 18th
High School Jazz Bands conclude the festival on Sunday, April 18 in Weigel Auditorium. Adjudicated performances run from 10 a.m-3:30 p.m. The OSU Jazz Ensemble gives a mini-concert from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by the awards presentation. All three concluding events are free.
