The Jazz Arts Group recently announced information about opportunities for Central Ohio youth jazz musicians in 2017. First, application details have been released for the 15th Annual Hank Marr High School Jazz Award. Named in honor of B3 organist Marr’s legendary career of over fifty years as a performer, teacher, arranger and conductor, the prize is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates excellence in musicianship and performance amongst Ohio’s young students of jazz. The grand prize includes a chance to perform with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra at a JazZoo concert in Summer 2017, a $500 cash prize, and jazz education books. Second, the schedule was released for auditions for the 2017-18 Columbus Youth Jazz Program. The CYJ program is a chance for students in grades 7 – 12 to participate in one of three outstanding learning and performing ensembles as well as two 8-week jazz immersion programs, with chances for students of all levels of jazz skill and experience to learn more about playing and appreciating jazz.
