The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus believes in the power of music to transform lives and is committed to offering lifelong-learning opportunities for individuals of all ages, interests, backgrounds and abilities. The JAG fulfills this vision through many outlets and that includes Summer music programs to help inspire and teach young people various music exploratory options. This summer, join the Jazz Arts Group as they present a number of programs designed to teach and inspire young people in the world of music and of course jazz…

CAMP BLUES

Join Sean Carney and the Sean Carney Band for CAMP Blues (June 11-15), a week-long ensemble experience focusing on learning about and playing the blues. CAMP Blues will conclude with a public performance at the Creekside Jazz & Blues Festival in Gahanna.

CAMP JAZZ

Join CAMP Jazz (July 16-20) to learn about jazz and American music, explore great jazz standards and play in a small ensemble setting. On Friday, there will be a recording session in the Jazz Academy recording studio followed by a performance at the Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest.

COLUMBUS COMMUNITY BIG BAND

Have big band/instrumental ensemble experience? None at all? Did you play an instrument in high school and interested in picking it up again? This ensemble is open to anyone interested in exploring influential big band music – Ellington, Basie and Kenton. In addition to the evening rehearsals (August 5-9), participants will perform at JazZoo! prior to the Columbus Jazz Orchestra on August 10.

Additional Classes

Learn the “ins and outs” of designing and composing music on a computer and create your own electronic music as we collaborate with COSI on Electronic Music Making (June 11-15). Live Recording CAMP (July 16-20) is a week-long exploration of sound, engineering, recording, software and equipment. And leave your reading glasses at home during “No Charts!” Ensemble (June 25-29). This course is designed to introduce students to playing their instruments by ear, an experience that will open new avenues of creativity for every participant.

The Jazz Academy will also host free workshops in conjunction with the Columbus Music Co-op titled “So You Want to Make Music in Columbus?” (Sunday, March 25) and “How to Throw a Benefit Show & Working with Music in the Community” (Sunday, April 22).
