Sun Ra Celebration presented by Planet D Nonet and Honk, Wail & Moan

Two powerhouse bands come together for the first time to celebrate the brilliant music of bandleader and composer Sun Ra at the McConnell Arts Center in Worthington. This is a special presentation separate from their usual Thursday night concert series. This Sun Ra tribute will take place this Saturday, February 4, from 7:30pm – 10pm and will feature Planet D Nonet and Columbus’ own Honk, Wail, and Moan. Tickets are just $15 for both bands. This will be Honk, Wail and Moan’s 18th annual Sun Ra tribute show and sure to be one of the best.

More about Planet D Nonet

Detroit’s Planet D Nonet was founded by RJ Spangler & James O’Donnell in 2007. Not your grand parents swing band (aka the Space Age Swing Band). A typical Planet D Nonet gig might involve very early jazz from Louis Armstrong or Mezz Mezzrow, Duke Ellington & Fletcher Henderson swing charts from the ’30’s, proto-Detroit R&B from Paul “Huckelbuck”Williams, King Porter or Todd Rhodes or space-age jazz from Sun Ra. The PD9 can play a swing dance, a concert performance a small pub or an art gallery. Whatever they do, they always have a Detroit twist & plenty of good humor with an eye toward turning people onto this music.

More about Columbus’ Honk, Wail & Moan

Columbus’ own Honk, Wail & Moan cross paths with the music of Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Ellington, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Raymond Scott, Lightnin Hopkins, Howlin Wolf and Stravinsky and are influenced by Avant Garde to New Orleans Traditional to Cartoon music. HWM mainly perform the original music and arrangements of their members, especially the late Brian A Casey and Mark B Greenwood.

Formed in 1991, HWM have performed all over Columbus, the Midwest and even Thailand, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach and NYC. Many things have been said about them: “Roundly entertaining; raucous; inventive; serious musicianship with a wacky sense of humor; swinging in a head-nodding, foot-tapping, enveloping fashion” among other things!
