The Phoenix Project with Honk Wail & Moan Live this Saturday

20 year veterans to the Columbus jazz music scene, Honk, Wail and Moan will join relative newcomer, The Phoenix Project this Saturday for a performance at Ruby Tuesday. Honk, Wail & Moan cross paths with the music of Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Ellington, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Raymond Scott, Lightnin Hopkins, Howlin Wolf and Stravinsky and are influenced by Avant Garde to New Orleans Traditional to Cartoon music. Honk Wail and Moan mainly perform the original music of their members, especially the late Brian A Casey and Mark B Greenwood.

The Phoenix Project is a new band lead by Ken Messer on saxophone, theremin and electronics. Not sure what a theremin is? A theremin is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without discernible physical contact from the player. The Phoenix Project does a mixture of Fusion and Global musical forms that are all their own devising. You may consider “Weather Report” and “Step Ahead” as their influences but what their music is much broader based and not so easily defined. Other members of the band include Ted Royalty, Vibes and Steel Pans, Stan Smith, Guitar; Brad Mellin, Five String Electric Cello; Steve Perakis, Bass who also performs with Honk Wail and Moan.

Join both bands this Saturday at Ruby Tuesday (not the restaurant) starting at 10pm.
