The third annual Memorial Jazz Concert in honor of dearly departed pianist, composer, and educator Mark Flugge will be held on Sunday, June 5th, at 2pm in Mees Hall on the campus of Capital University in Bexley. Like previous installments, this concert will enlist many of Columbus’ finest jazz musicians to pay tribute to this musical titan. Performers include the Famous Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Vaughn Wiester; saxophonists Michael Cox and Randy Mather; vocalist Lisa Clark; vibraphonist Patrick Overturf; double bassist Marty Quinn, the winner of the Capital 2016 Mark Flugge Jazz Award; and drummer Aaron Scott, as well as many other colleagues and students of Flugge’s. The afternoon’s program will include three recently-commissioned arrangements for big band, by New York arrangers John Fedchock (a 2016 Grammy finalist for best jazz arrangement) and Mark Lopeman, and FJO trumpeter Bob Larson. This concert is sponsored by the Mark Flugge Memorial Fund in conjunction with Capital University, and is free and open to the public. I greatly enjoyed the 2015 concert, so I’m sure that this year’s tribute will be another can’t-miss performance. Whether you can or can’t attend, please consider purchasing a copy of Mark Flugge Remembered: Jazz Originals and Standards, the 2015 double-CD release produced by the Memorial Fund that provides a wealth of great Flugge performances, by visiting markflugge.com (samples and digital purchases available here). Proceeds support commissions, the Mark Flugge Jazz Award, and future CD releases. Keep reading for a sampling of footage of Flugge and tribute performances:
