Trumpeter and Celina, Ohio native John Lake is playing two shows in Columbus next week as part of a mini-tour of his home state. Though he leads his own original groups SHIRLEY and The John Lake Ensemble, Lake’s Columbus debut shows will feature groups of top local talent that he will be meeting for the first time. On Monday, August 11th, the John Lake Quintet will take the stage at Dicks Den for a 9pm show. This band will include Max Button on drums, Nate Smith on bass, Tony Bonardi on keyboards, and Michael Cox on saxophone. Two days later, Wednesday, August 13th, for a 8pm Jazz Wednesday show at Brothers Drake, the John Lake Quartet will feature the same lineup, but without Cox.
Both of these shows will consist mostly of standards and other jazz arrangements to showcase the musicianship of Lake and the band. As John told me via email, “I’m very excited to play at Dick’s Den, as it’s well known among jazz musicians as being a great Midwestern club with great audiences, and Brothers Drake seems like a great new venue to bring some jazz to.” These shows should be great opportunities to see a rising jazz musician in intimate venues.
