Vijay Iyer Trio at Wexner Center Thursday

Acclaimed forward-thinking pianist Vijay Iyer returns to the Wexner Center Performance Space for a highly anticipated show with his Trio on Thursday, April 16th at 8pm. Tickets, which are going fast, are available here. Iyer is a ceaseless musical explorer, working in many styles and textures – his last visit to the Wexner Center in 2012 presented his Tirtha trio that reshaped Indian classical music with a jazz twist. On this current tour, however, Iyer has returned to his musical home base: his core piano trio, with Stephan Crump on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. They are on tour in support of their 2015 release Break Stuff, Iyer’s second recording for world-renowned ECM Records. While previous releases by the trio mixed originals with arresting takes on pop music tunes, the new album finds this group of world-class musicians digging further into their own concept of the piano trio. Arrangements of well-chosen standards by Strayhorn, Monk, and Coltrane are presented alongside Iyer’s powerful compositions, resulting in a deep journey into modern jazz. The band has a knack for making innovation fun for the audience, and this concert should be no exception. Keep reading for a short movie on the making of Break Stuff:
