What the World Needs Now: Bacharach, Brubeck & Beyond

Under the direction of world-renowned band leader and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra (CJO) continues to break new ground while honoring the rich heritage of America’s classical music – jazz. The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) kicks off the 2013-14 Swingin’ with the CJO season with “What the World Needs Now: Bacharach, Brubeck & Beyond” (October 24-27 at the Southern Theatre). From “The Look of Love” to “Take Five,” the CJO celebrates the timeless works of these songwriting masters and purveyors of cool. The CJO welcomes back Grammy Award-winning bassist/composer/arranger John Clayton to lead the orchestra in a number of Bacharach classics with help from trumpeter/vocalist David Pruyn. The incredible talents of our very own Bobby Floyd will also be on display including a tribute to the late great Dave Brubeck, considered to be one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz.

Mr. Clayton’s most recent collaboration with the CJO was the 2012 tribute to Rosa Parks, “Suite Rosa,” at the Lincoln Theatre in which he arranged and guest conducted. He also has composed and guest conducted the 2005 CJO concerts “Art of the Big Band;” composed and conducted the world premiere of “The Colors of Jazz,” and served as consultant on its corresponding CD recording; guest conducted the 2007 CJO concerts “Miles Smiles” at the Southern Theatre; and composed the 2007 “Jazz Plays Art” commission centered on the work of Aminah Robinson.

Audience members can join Byron Stripling for a casual and engaging conversation with John Clayton and the wonderful guest artists of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in a new workshop series at the Jazz Academy. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” provides participants a behind-the-scenes glimpse from the artist perspective on performing with the CJO – adding new perspective to being an audience member. In addition to the opportunity to learn something new, each guest artist will be asked to share what they are currently listening to on their iPods or CD players, introducing audiences to new and exciting music and artists. “Offstage at the Jazz Academy” is free to CJO subscribers and $10 for general registrants. Pre-registration is requested and available at www.jazzartsgroup.org.
